So it appears that the light may be on inside the head of Shawne Merriman but out for the season. It was reported today that Merriman will end his season with one game under his belt and have surgery to repair the two torn ligaments in his knee.

Now, the severity of the injury is hard to tell because one of the torn ligaments he had during college and has been playing with ever since. Obviously the LCL ligament was a bigger factor in his play and he has chosen to have surgery. This comes as small news compared to the already large loss of Tom Brady. Not that Shawne Merriman is trying to steal thunder away from Tom, but this is just as big a blow to San Diego as is the Patriots. Merriman is an intense leader for the Chargers and i can assure you that QB’s around the league are breathing a deep sigh of relief to hear that Merriman will not be blitzing them from the left side. As for the Charger’s defense, this will obviously be a big blow, but i can assure you that the secret strength of the Charger’s D is in their secondary. Although it was not apparent on sunday against Carolina, in a last ditch effort the Panthers scored the winning TD, the Charger’s should not be overlooked from a fantasy perspective.

This NFL season has already had some interesting story lines play out, QB Tom Brady is out for the season, WR Nate Burelson is also out, and now news that Merriman is out begs to ask the question, which NFL team now leads the league in Power Rankings? Well it’s none other than my Cowboys. There destruction of the Browns showed what a great O-Line and great off season drafting can do. Tony Romo is at the top of his game, even all the while dating Jessica Simpson, and I think everything is in place to watch them play in Tampa in February. There were a lot of big games this past weekend, the shocker in Indiannapolis, just as they unveiled their new stadium, the last minute win by Carolina, and the debaucle of the Rams only scoring 3 points. If week 1 is any indication of what the 2008 season has in store, everybody better buckle up and Getcha Popcorn ready, cause you’re in for one hell of a ride.

p.s. This week I will be facing off against Maximillen in our fantasy pool. Wish me luck as he just picked up Matt Cassel and has a superb receiving corps in T.O., Burress and Jennings. Hopefully my ground game can payoff big. I’m open to suggestions to who i should start at QB, Big Ben, or Brett the Jet.

Shawne Merriman with two torn knee ligaments is going to delay the inevitable by not going through with surgery.

Having been newly introduced to the world of knee injuries (total of 10 weeks I will be out - almost 5 and counting now), having two torn knee ligaments with the possibility of suffering a career ending injury is insultingly idiotic. Yeah your tough Shawne but please if you ruin a great career you might as well have surgery. You are likely going to struggle this season, taking snaps off to rest and not being able to go as hard - sure cortisone shots (and perhaps steroids) is up your alley it’s also dumb for a season that will probably end up being a lost cause.

Instead of risking it, just do yourself, the Chargers and most importantly telling people that it is okay to sit out no matter how strong your desire to play, it’s better to be smart then a dumbass at the end of the day. It makes no sense financially for you to play, you’ll still be earning your paycheck on the sidelines.

As a Chargers fan (I love 3 teams), please just go on with surgery. The rest of the blogosphere agrees.
